I had the best of intentions of putting this up a month ago, and in starting our new year a month ago but you know how intentions are…. Sickness, co-op,work, 1oo1 distractions, and here we are….finally starting our new school year. After a lot of thought and research we have covered all of our desired subjects for the year, but I am sure we will make up plenty as we go along!
Our 2016-2015 Kindergarten & Third Grade Curriculum Choices
First we attend a co-op every Monday where they gets geography, art, health, and a few other subjects as well as getting in some extra socialization. We will then school Tuesday-Thursday and use Friday for field trips and catch up work.
We have chosen Geo Matters Galloping The Globe as our core curriculum for the year for both kids (unboxing to come soon!) I am going to share our weekly recaps over each weekend and hope you get some great info to use. Galloping the Globe is a geography based curriculum that also naturally introduces some history and social studies as well. The package comes with extra materials for missionary studies, an around the world cookbook, lapbook pieces, and other resources .
Bible-We will be using a Morning Bible Basket, Bible Journaling, and working through various Bible studies by Kim Sorgius of Not Consumed like- A Content Heart and the Proverbs Brick Challenge from Proverbial Homemaker.
Math-Math U See Beta (Third) Primer (Kindergarten)- We started this halfway through last year and went slow, we will likely have it finished mid-year again and will move on to Gamma. I have used the program since Alpha with my son and it really works well as it is easy to teach and to understand. I love the manipulatives!
While there are many language arts suggestions in Galloping the Globe we are going at our own rythym for this.
Reading– My 3rd grader reads 15 mins a day minimum and logs his books in this awesome book log I found on Amazon. Kids can log ate, title, author, rating, whether they read on their own or with assistance, and a small area for a summary or thoughts.
Phonics- With the Kinder we are working our way through the Bob Books, The Reading Lesson, and Hooked on Phonics.
Spelling- I am using random resources for now from Pinterest and www.thechristianhomeschoolhub.com.
Grammar-Growing With Grammar Level 1– This is a carry over from last year since we moved slowly through it. We also love to play Silly Sentences once a week to reinforce
Handwriting- This is the most hated subject by my boy so I do the minimum and we mix it up with different things so its not the same in day in and day out.
Print Power from Handwriting Without Tears– We will probably use this about twice a week, Sassy Pants gets the Kinder level of HWOT.For my little begining writer we are also practicing writing letters and simple sight words on primary paper..
Copywork- Once a week, depending on our topic of study it will range from quotes to Shel Silverstein poems to excerpts from the Constitution.
Writing postcards once a week to family and friends.
Science- Science will be various units on things that pertain to whatever country we are studying in Galloping the Globe. China-Pandas, North America- Everything from frogs to buffalo , Brazil the Amazon Rainforest and River, etc… Dioramas, reports, videos, and hands on when possible will make up our science experiences.
I would love to hear what you have chosen for this new school year!
