Besides the fact that it is so much cheaper to make your own at home, spice and seasoning mixes just taste so much better when you blend them yourself. You can also control the ingredients, leaving out things like salt and sugar while increasing your favorite herbs and spices. I have my own favorite blend that I have altered a bit to make it healthier, in honor of the new year and all… It has some common ingredients in it that you would expect and a few that you might not. This recipe makes enough for about 2 pots or you can double, triple, or quadruple the recipe and keep it on hand all throughout the chilly (chili?) season. This Homemade Chili Seasoning is just right.
Ingredients for Homemade Chili Seasoning:
1 T. Chili powder
2 T. dried Onions, minced
2 tsp. Cumin
1 tsp. Paprika
1 tsp. Crushed Red Repper Flakes
2 tsp. Xanthan Gum (or cornstarch)
(shhh- my two super secret ingredients below)
2 tsp. dry Ground Mustard powder
1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
Directions to make your own Homemade Chili Seasoning:
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and stir- I use a whisk to really combine everything well then transfer to a small mason jar-because well..mason jar. Everything looks and tastes better in a mason jar !
To use: add about 1 1/2 T. -2 T. to chili-use more or less to taste.
