My kids LOVE homemade playdough! They are always asking me to whip up a batch of something-heavily scented. We have made coffee scented, peppermint, pumpkin pie spice, and more. For Christmas I really wanted something special that we could enjoy at home as well as make for gifts for friends (this is also a great activity for kids on Thanksgiving while you are busy cooking). I wanted it to be more than just playdough scented with a few spices and seasonings so I experimented with my favorite no cook playdough recipe and molasses to get it as close to the real thing as possible. This came out pretty darn close in scent, and feel with no added calories to wreck your diet! It also happens to be a gluten free playdough recipe.
Spiced Gingerbread Playdough
1 -1 1/2 cups cornstarch
1 T. baking soda
3 T. molasses
2 tsp. water
2 T. coconut oil
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Combine 1 cup corn starch, baking soda, molasses, water, vegetable oil, ginger, cinnamon, allpsice, and vanilla extract until well combined, stirring with a wooden spoon. Add more corn starch up to another 1/2 cup until playdough is no longer sticky but still holds together. Knead well on floured surface.
Whenever we do play dough I set out lots of fun tools for the kids to use like- craft sticks for cutting, rollers, cookie cutters, etc. For this gingerbread playdough I of course set out gingerbread cookie cutters in various sizes, buttons, and google eyes.
Spatulas are fun too for a little imaginative play.
My little one really loved this recipe because it has such a warm and rich scent as well as a soft texture.
