I have a rising kindergartener this year that is still learning her letter and I need fun and engaging ways to keep her interested while she is learning- she is a tough cookie! I was also looking for something to keep her busy in the morning while I get brother started on his assignments. My little girl loves anything that requires the use of her senses, and if it is more than one even better so I thought I would start there. Homemade playdough is always a hit in my house and the kids frequently beg for a batch of something new. Since this dough was for the morning I figured it would be great to have something that would help wake her up and get her mind ready and alert for learning. This is what I came up with and it is a great part of our mornings now and even her big brother, my third grader likes to get in on the action practicing spelling words or just covering up his Minecraft Minis. Sight, smell, touch, and even sound as it splats and squishes gives their senses a morning workout! Ms. Sassy Pants uses hers with playdough mats, to stamp letters and simple cvc sight words into for practice, and just for free play as well.
Wake up Citrus Essential Oil Homemade Playdough
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp. coconut oil
1 cup salt
2 cups water
3 tsp. cream of tartar
finely grated zest of 2 oranges
Combine all ingredients except essential oils and zest in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
Stir frequently until mixture begins to pull away from sides of pan and clump together.
Remove from heat and allow to cool until it is comfortable to the touch, mix in orange zest and essential oils. Knead until cool and dough is the right consistency. You can zest up whatever citrus you have on hand- orange, lemon, lime, or even a clementine like I used this time!
Once completely cool your dough is ready for play!
